The gunnera has huge, leathery leaves up to three feet across and has been nicknamed "dinosaur food." When it blooms, it sends up an arm-thick stalk with something like a pinecone on top. A very weird plant. A walk through a patch of gunneras feels like a page from "The Lost World."
